Fasten Those Seatbelts and Prepare for the Ride of Your Life!

It’s tough to find a sport quite as thrilling as go-karting. The blazing speed, the weaving of the track and the non-stop adrenaline rush is truly unmatched. No matter if you’re a complete novice or seasoned vet, the thrill of go-kart racing never surrenders.

Yet, before you can confidently call yourself a true master of the track, there’s still plenty left to learn. Luckily, we’ve strung together a few of our favorite go-kart racing tips that should help you cross that checkered finish line in record time. Whether you’re about to head out for your first race or 100th race, these go-kart racing tips are designed to assist with racers of all ages and skill level. Start your engines!

  1. Familiarize Yourself with the Tack

One of the best ways to improve your lap time is to familiarize yourself with the track before a race. Every go-kart racetrack has its own unique set of twists, turns, barriers and even signage. Remember, there’s more than one way to navigate a turn and it’s up to you to decide how. If possible, take a practice lap around the track and take note of which turns, and angles might slow you down. Likewise, take note on how the other drivers are performing. Learn from their mistakes. Even in go-kart racing those split-seconds can be a huge difference maker.

  1. Keep Your Hands Locked In

Often times fresh-faced racers assume driving a go-kart is just like driving a car. It’s not. Go-karts have incredibly sensitive steering, and a loose grip of the wheel will more than likely see you spinning out of control. Aim to keep your hands locked in tight at the ‘quarter to three’ position at all times. This will allow for a much more precise control over the go-kart and you’ll be able to react quicker to any slides.

  1. Hit the Brakes!

Similar to steering, the brakes of a go-kart are much different than that of a regular car. Here’s the best approach for utilizing those brakes: as you begin to approach a turn hit the brakes hard, then as you come into the apex (the height of the turn) gradually release them. It might take a little practice, but this will help to better position you to accelerate after those initial turns. For well-versed drivers, we recommend researching “trail braking” for more in-depth racing tips.

  1. Utilize the Whole Track

One of the most popular misconceptions about go-kart racing is that it’s always best to stay on the inside lane. Keep in mind this isn’t NASCAR. The best go-kart drivers know that in order to finish with the fastest time they need to use the entire track. This means often taking a wide approach on turns to hit that apex perfectly in stride. Mastering the apex is easier said than done, but when you hit it just right your speed and acceleration won’t skip a beat.

  1. Stay Cool, Calm and Confident

The go-kart circuit can be an intimidating place for new drivers, and more often than not is only amplified by advanced drivers zipping past you at seemingly record-breaking speeds. Don’t feel discouraged! Remember, these drivers were once in your shoes as well. Take heed to these racing tips, keep practicing and one day you’ll be just as good if not better than these other racers. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keep at it and one day you’ll be sitting at the top of the pole!
